Welcome to Kit O’Toole’s writing website. I’m a Chicago-based freelance writer specializing in popular culture and technology topics. For over 19 years I have written music, concert, and book reviews, interviews, popular culture essays, and technology “how to” articles. In addition, I bring my academic background to my writing by thoroughly researching my topics.

- I am an avid researcher and enjoy learning, which enable me to write on a variety of topics. In addition, I adhere to deadlines seriously and will work with you to make sure you are completely satisfied with my writing. You can expect attention to detail, professionalism, and a willingness to explore unique topics.
- What do I write about?
- My primary areas of expertise involve popular culture and technology. I review CDs, concerts, books, and television shows, as well as write commentary on current cultural issues. My technology-related writing concerns the Internet, addressing new to moderate-level computer users. Guides to the best Firefox add-ons, describing Twitter advantages and disadvantages, and reviewing the latest manuals are just a few examples of my work.
- What unique qualities do I possess as a writer?
- Initially my interests lay in journalism, earning a B.A. in Literature and Communications (Benedictine University) and an M.A. in Writing (DePaul University). Exploring related areas, I pursued my research interest in teaching writing through online technology, earning an Ed.D. in Instructional Technology from Northern Illinois University. Combining my academic and professional backgrounds, I bring my research skills and journalism experience to my writing, no matter the subject.
- Where have I been published?
- I maintain a bi-weekly music column, "The Cutout Bin," at Blogcritics.org, as well as write music and book reviews, cultural essays, and technology pieces. Since 1996 I have been a contributing editor for Beatlefan, the leading publication for Beatles collectors. My work has also appeared in such publications as Showcase Chicago and Goldmine. In addition, I have published a scholarly book and dissertation, "Toward a Tri-Level Model for Online Writing Laboratory (OWL) Research and Design."
